But for Propel, right now, 42 also has some great significance. For the first time in the 10 years that Propel has existed, we are proud to announce there are 42 of our students attending high school!!!!
Wait. What’s that? What’s the big deal about kids going to high school? Well. Glad you asked. High school is not mandatory in Serbia. You heard that right. Kids here can stop their education after 8th grade. Sadly, many do.
There are school offering classes from delivery logistics, electrical engineering, medicine, dance, arts, and more. Despite this vast array of educational/training opportunities available, many kids don’t take advantage of these life-changing possibilities.
Often the decision is economical. Kids can beg in the city center. Daughters can get government benefits by having babies. Why invest another four years in their education when they can start bringing money in…now???
It is a sad reality. But we look at these 42 students (25 boys,17 girls) who made the leap and we are proud to be part of their success. Tho’ we are just a conduit. It is the love and support of their sponsors that make this phase of their education a reality. We could not do this without your help.
Speaking of sponsors and the significance of 42…as of this update’s publication, Propel has 42 students in need of a sponsor. No, not all high school students. The funny this is, the gender mix is also 25 boys and 17 girls. The grades range from 1st grade up to high school freshman. Many of these kids are the younger siblings of other Propel students…so we know just how badly they need the love and support a sponsor can give.
